The Cathedral of St John the Baptist, a Roman Catholic Church, is the Mother Church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Savannah. The colonial government of the city once forbade Roman Catholic settlers to settle here because it was feared that they would be more likely to bow to the Spanish authorities, but after the American Revolution this prohibition soon ceased to play a role.
