Where is Pikes Peak?
The future sounds like a police siren, but nobody here at Pikes Peak near Colorado Springs wonders about that anymore. Not on a Sunday like this, when the famous mountain race “Pikes Peak International Hill Climb” is held. Since 1916, the roaring of the internal combustion engines has dominated the race weekend once a year, the horrors of the game that is on and off. But for a few years now, the electric, environmentally friendly quiet treads have been racing there-if not for the built-in Sirens. Regulation of the race management, 120 decibels loud.
Again, beside the 22 motorcycles and 55 racing cars, some sirens are howling up the mountain. “Hill Climb” – well, that’s seriously understated. From 2862 meters above sea level, it goes in a row, at a distance of two or three minutes, high to the summit at 4302 meters – which is about as if you were racing from the Zugspitze quickly up to the Matterhorn, on a nearly 20 Kilometer long road, popular with tourists, through 156 curves, bordered by trees, rocks, precipices, with bales of straw, more decorative than securing.
