It is a city in El Paso County, Texas, United States. The population of the city according to the census of 2004 is 592.099 inhabitants, being the sixth most populous city in Texas, and the vigésimoprimera most populous in the united States.
The Step is the second most important city along the border between Mexico and the united States, after San Diego. It is located opposite Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua; Mexico, cities separated by the Rio Bravo or Rio Grande. Between them they form a metropolitan area of two and a half million people.
El Paso houses the University of Texas in El Paso, founded in 1914, as well as the Health Sciences campus of the Texas University of Technology. In addition, the city is a important military base called Fort Bliss, which is a military installation of the Army of the united States located in the northeast of the city that stretches towards the north to White Sands Missile Range. Franklin Mountain is located inside El Paso, extending from the North, clearly dividing the city into two sections.
The city has an airport (El Paso International Airport), a railway station and an extensive road network, including routes I-10, U.S. 54, U.S. 180, U.S. 85 and U.S. 62.
