Montería is located in the lowlands (18 meters above sea level)and has hardly any significant elevations. It is bordered to the north by the municipalities of Cereté, Puerto Escondido and San Pelayo, to the East by San Carlos and Planeta Rica, and to the South by Tierralta and Valencia. In the western direction, where the municipios Canalete, Puerto Escondido and Los Cordobas lie, it is only 50 kilometers to the sea, which is why Montería is attributed to the Caribbean Region (Caribe). The city is surrounded by many streams and water flows, the Rio Sinú being the largest and most important river. That is why Montería is affectionately called the “Pearl of Sinú”.
