Flag of Guatemala

Guatemala is a state of Central America, bordering Mexico in the North and West, Belize in the North-East, Honduras in the South-East, and El Salvador in the South.

Its area represents 108,890 km2 and a population of 13.3 million inhabitants (2009). It is a democratic constitutional republic, divided into 22 departments (departaments; singular : departamento). The capital is Guatemala city (Guatemala la Nueva). Other major cities : Quetzaltenango, Escuintla, Petén.
