The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a state in South-West Asia (Arabian Peninsula), consisting of seven emirates (imarat), Abu Zaby (Abu Dhabi), ‘Ajman, Al Fujayrah, Ash Shariqah (Sharjah), Dubai (Dubai), Ra’s al Khaymah, Umm al Qaywayn (Quwain).

Bordering the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, the country borders Saudi Arabia and the Sultanate of Oman. With an area of 83.600 km2, it has a population of 5.31 million (2012). The capital is Abu Dhabi (604,000 inhabitants). Other major cities : Dubai (1.4 million inhabitants), Sharjah (550,000 inhabitants), al Ayn (410,000 inhabitants), etc.
