Charleston is a city in South Carolina, United States. It is the oldest capital and most populous city in South Carolina after Columbia. It lies along the shores of the Atlantic Ocean.
It was founded in 1670 by immigrant Englishmen. In the first period of its establishment, the city was named after King John II of England. Charles is named “Charles Town” in his honor. Over time this name evolved into “Charleston”.
