Mount Whitney is the highest peak in the contiguous United States, with a height of 4421 meters. It is located in Inyo County. The western slope of the mountain ends in the Redwoods National Park.

The mountain was named after Josiah Whitney, the head of the California department of geology. The first ascent was made by Charles Begole, A. H. Johnson and John Lucas in 1873.
