Wellingborough is a market town and a district of Northamptonshire, England, located about 18 km from the capital of Northampton. The city is located on the north side of the Nene River, most of the old town is located on the hillsides above the current floodplain of the river. Due to the frequent flooding of the Nene River, the city was mainly built above the current floodplain level.
Originally named “Wendelingburgh”, the town was founded in the early 6th century by a Saxon chief called Waendel and is mentioned in the Domesday Book as “Wendelburie”. The city received a charter from the royal market in 1201, by King John of England.
