Where is Washington National Cathedral?
Address: 3101 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, DC 20016
Burials: Woodrow Wilson, Helen Keller, Matthew Shepard, MORE
Architects: George Frederick Bodley, Philip H. Frohman, Henry Vaughan
Welcome to American Gothic. The National Cathedral is an excellent homage to the Gothic architectural styles of the Middle Ages. There are floating arches and pointed arches in abundance. It also stands on the highest point in Washington DC – the Gloria In Excelsis Tower is 206 meters above sea level.
Here are many works of art to marvel at. There are over 200 stained glass windows as well as monuments to important personalities, such as the statues of Washington and Lincoln. Pay attention to the state seals of all US states embedded in the marble floor.
A presidential Cathedral
Four US presidents were buried here: Woodrow Wilson, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford. Speaking of Presidents: Teddy Roosevelt laid the foundation stone, and George H. W. Bush inserted the last crucifix.
Plenty Of Space
Also pay attention to the Space Window in the southern aisle of the cathedral. It commemorates the landing of man on the moon. A piece of moon rock is embedded in the middle of the window. Where we are on the subject, you should take a look at the northwest tower. There is a grotesque depiction of Darth Vader from Star Wars to discover!
