The history of the Toledo, Ohio zoo began in 1900 with the founding of the Toledo Zoological Gardens. Even today, some of the zoo buildings remind of this time. Until 1982, the Zoo was owned by the city of Toledo, but was then turned over to the Toledo Zoological Society. Today, the Zoo houses more than 9,000 animals from more than 500 species, which visitors can experience up close thanks to innovative enclosures. Special Highlights are the Arctic Encounter and the Hippoquarium, where you can face the hippos eye to eye even under water – only separated by a glass wall.
