Where is Skien Located?

Skien was first mentioned as a solid settlement in the year 1000. The city has remained relatively large, the entire municipality of Skien has about 53,000 inhabitants. A few special features / sights but also offers this small town and is well worth a detour.

The first thing to mention is the Telemark canal, which runs from the city to the Inland. From the 15th century onwards, Skien was an important place of trade for Wood, the construction of the canal at the time was mainly used to speed up the transport of the tribes from the interior of the country to Skien. Even today, Wood and paper production is one, or better the main industry of the city.

For the tourist is interesting in addition to a ride on the canal – there are three historic ships in the season – of course the city itself, which is best opened up by a leisurely stroll. The Skien Kirke, an impressive two-tower church built in neo-Gothic style, is definitely worth seeing. Also interesting are the ruins of the stone Church on the Chapter mountain, with a relatively well-preserved crypt.
