The approximately 160 km long Skyline Drive crosses the Park from North to South. The maximum speed is 35 miles/hour. Since the Drive leads to numerous worthwhile viewpoints, one should consider for the route at least 5 hours.
In the east-West direction, the Park is crossed between Sperryville and Luray by the US 221.
Note traffic disturbances occur on the Skyline Drive on summer weekends due to the high number of visitors. In part, the road can only be driven at step speed. The parking spaces at the viewing points are then often crowded.
