Where is Santa Catalina Island?

About 50 km off the coast of California is the Santa Catalina Island with its small capital Avalon. The island is privately owned, is a popular day trip destination for the greater Los Angeles area. A lot of things are different here, rather unAmerican. There is no private car traffic on the island. Divers come here at their expense, and if the ferries of the day tourists have left, lays a soothing calm over the island, with its mountains and bays. The “island capital” Avalon offers accommodation.
