Where is Sacre Coeur Located?

The Sacré-Coeur in Paris. It is the radiant white landmark of Paris: the Roman Catholic sanctuary of Sacré-Cœur. Proudly perched on the 130-metre High hill of Montmartre district. Not only does the Parisian landmark itself offer a unique view, but from up there, the whole of Paris lies at the visitor’s feet.

What Country is Sacre Coeur in?

The history of the church began in the 19th century, so it is still quite young. Architect Paul Abadie designed the cathedral, drawing inspiration from St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice and Hagia Sofia in Istanbul, as well as the Cathedral of Périgueux, of which he was the restorer. The foundation stone was laid in 1875. Abadie did not experience the completion, because he died nine years after the groundbreaking. Six architects later and 39 years after construction began, the church was completed in 1914.

It is 83 meters high, with the enormous dome alone impressing with a height of 55 meters. Since the end of the construction period coincided with the first year of the war in 1914, it was not consecrated until 1919, after the end of the first World War. Pope Benedict XV gave it the title Basilica minor, meaning small Basilica. From its architecture, however, Sacré-Cœur is not a basilica but a cross-domed church, which is so typical of Byzantine church construction.
