Rio Grande is known as the “City of the Anvil”. The mountainous area is part of the Caribbean National Forest, also known as the Sierra de Luquillo. It should be mentioned that most of this forest is located within the municipality of Rio Grande. Its municipal patron saint is the Virgin of Nuestra Señora del Carmen.


Rio Grande is bordered to the north by the Atlantic Ocean; to the east by the municipalities of Luquillo and Ceiba; to the west by Loíza, and to the south by Naguabo and Las Piedras.
Geographically it belongs to the region called Los Llanos Costaneros del Norte. It has alluvial terrain, interrupted by some rocky promontories and sand dunes on the coastline.
