Where is Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park?
A visit to this almost 57 km2 Park is like walking through the gateway to a world where everything is huge and Green – a rainforest where ferns stretch across mossy paths and form patchwork patterns of light and shadow. Start your exploration with a walk among the ancient sequoias on the five-Kilometer Prairie Creek and Cathedral Tree Loop, a loop that begins at the state park visitor center. From the first step, the keyword is “lush”.
“A visit to this Park is like walking through the gate to a world where everything is huge and green.”
Moss covered rocks, Lichens hang from the Branches, the native sorrel (Oxalis oregana) grows on the ground and trees reach gigantic proportions. Once you’re out of your mind, head to Elk Prairie, a golden meadow where you’ll have a good chance of seeing Roosevelt Wapitis-weighing up to half a ton, the largest land animals in California. Even if they appear good-natured while chewing grass bored, one should not get too close to them, especially not to the males during the autumn rutting season. And if you’ve ever been to Elk Prairie, you can also take the Trillium Falls Trail, a four-kilometre circular trail between old sequoias.
