Where is Pearl Harbor?

Pearl Harbor on Oahu is 7.5 miles from Honolulu. Here is located the largest base of the US Navy in the Pacific Ocean. The naval base was established here in 1900.

At the end of 1941 there were 75 warships in Pearl Harbor. On December 7, 1941, at 7:50 AM, the base was attacked by Japanese aircraft, which destroyed within two hours most of the American fleet (18 large ships, 200 aircraft).

This event was for the US the beginning of their participation in the Second World War. President Franklin Roosevelt called December 7, 1941 “the day of indelible shame.”

In modern American speech, “Pearl Harbor” figuratively became synonymous with an unexpected, treacherous attack. The memorial of the military ship “USS Arizona“, dedicated to the memory of the dead seamen, in 1962 was granted the status of a national monument.
