Where is Monterey Bay Aquarium?
The Monterey Bay Aquarium in California is one of the most beautiful and largest aquariums in the world. It is located at the end of Cannery Road in Monterey and is famous worldwide for its elaborately-designed aquariums.
During our trip to the USA in 2014 we had the pleasure to get to know the great underwater worlds of the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
It was opened in 1984 by a $ 55 million donation from David Packard, one of the co-founders of Hewlett-Packard, in a former fish factory. The latter was closed after the number of sardines had fallen further and further because of overfishing. The Monterey Bay Aquarium was created from the very beginning with the idea to interest and inspire its visitors for the protection of the oceans. In 1996, an extension was added to the Auqarium for 57 million dollars. Since 2002 you can even hear the Hovden Cannery steam pipe every day, which was currently blown by the fish factory.
More than 35,000 marine animals in around 600 species now live in the Monterey Bay Aquarium and attract almost 2 million visitors per year. The Star of the more than 200 tank aquarium is a 9 Meter high Aquarium with kelp forest, which catches your eye right after the entrance. A huge basin with around 1.1 million litres of water.
