The Mediterranean Sea is a 3.02 million km2 side sea of the Atlantic Ocean between southern Europe, Middle Asia and North Africa. It is connected to the Atlantic Ocean via the Strait of Gibraltar and to the Indian Ocean via the Suez Canal and the Red Sea.

To the Mediterranean Sea belong the peripheral seas Adriatic Sea, Aegean Sea, Sea of Marmara and Black Sea, which is connected by the Bosporus. The Mediterranean climate prevails throughout the Mediterranean.

The Mediterranean Sea is an intercontinental secondary sea of the Atlantic Ocean between southern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa (Figure 1).
It covers an area of 3.02 million km2 and a water volume of 4.38 million km3.

The Mediterranean sea is connected to the strategically important Strait of Gibraltar, a 14-to 44-km-wide and 60-km-long Strait between Europe and Africa, with the Atlantic ocean and through the Suez canal and the Red sea with the Indian ocean.
