Around 1873 there were numerous ore mining sites in the area of the present city of Joplin when it was decided to build a town here. The House of Lords, the Connor and the Keystone Hotel, the Newman Mercantile Store, the Frisco and the Union Depot, the Scottish Rite Cathedral, the Liberty Building and the Fox Theatre are also worth visiting. After World War II, the mining operations around Joplin were closed down. The city of Carthage is located on the historical Route 66 and also preserves some of the ancient times of the Civil War.
