What County is Houghton?

The city of Houghton is located far North in Michigan on the Keweenaw Peninsula. Many immigrants from Cornwall and Finland settled here to work in copper mines. The mines have been closed since the 1960s, but a mining college continues the Tradition in some way. The settlement was founded in 1854 and had the reputation that heir would live exclusively “thieves, crooks, murderers and Indians”. Baraga is home to the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community of Chippewa Indians. Ironwood is the center of a ski resort. Here is the world’s largest Indian (15.8 m). Marquette is at today a major ore port on Lake Superior.
