The Hells Canyon is the largest part of which is in Oregon, the smaller one in Idaho, is not as well known as the Grand Canyon, but the canyons are up to over 2,400 meters deep that the Snake River dug into the Wallowa Mountains.

The area on both sides of Hells Canyon has been designated as a 263,000 hectare recreation area (Hells Canyon National Recreation Area) since 1975, of which 86,000 hectares are wilderness areas. In contrast to the stepped walls of the Grand Canyon, those of Hells Canyon are inclined and also made of dark volcanic rock, in contrast to the colored sedimentary rock of the Grand Canyon.
