Where is Guantanamo Located?

The Bahía de Guantánamo (Spanish for Bay of Guantánamo) is a Bay of the Caribbean Sea in the southern part of Cuba, 20 kilometres inland and up to eight kilometres wide. It bears the name of the city of Guantánamo, located twelve kilometers to the North.

In the Bay of Guantánamo there is a natural harbor, which can also be accessed by submarines and large ships due to the large depth of water.

In the German-speaking area, the English name of the Bay, “Guantanamo Bay”, is usually associated with the US military’s lease area on the southern part of the Bay, the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, as well as with the prison camp established there in 2002.
