First information came from Friedl Hofstetter, then we read it in a US newspaper: an outstanding automobile museum had been opened in Gateway, CO. In Gateway? Actually, one could hardly believe this, because the place slowly but surely dawned on an existence as a Ghost Town.

Gateway had probably experienced its best times around 1940, as the war-important Vanadium was found and mined in the area. Later, the mining industry fell asleep and the few remaining residents – around 100 – earned their livelihood through Ranching.

The core of the settlement east of the Dolores River Bridge disintegrated visibly, the Gas Station closed, only the Post office remained. Was there another store, General Store? Finally, probably not anymore. Those who needed something were forced to drive over gravel to Moab, UT or immediately to Grand Junction. In both directions about 50 miles distance.
