Where is Fifth Avenue?

5th Avenue in New York City is not only one of the most famous streets in the world, but also one of the most interesting. Several boutiques and department stores as well as magnificent buildings and sights line the street that runs from Washington Square Park through all of Manhattan to Harlem and on the west side of which is Central Park.

In 1811, it was decided to build Manhattan with streets at right angles to each other; since it was not intended to make the area an expensive residential area with luxurious shops, the streets also got no names but only numbers. At that time, New York City had only a little over 100,000 inhabitants – only from 1825 the number of inhabitants rose rapidly.

But hardly anyone lived in the area around 50th Street, so that Central Park could easily be built there.
In the sixties of the 19th century, the then Grande Dame of the New York society, Caroline Astor, had a house built on 5th Street and from that point on the boom of high Society began to have magnificent houses and villas built there as well.
