Where is Eixample Located?

You can’t have been to Barcelona without spending a little time in Eixample! The EIXAMPLE is the upper part of the centre of Barcelona and is the complete opposite to the lower part of the old town (Ciutat Vella).

While CIUTAT VELLA is filled with small, winding and narrow streets, the Eixample blocks in a perfect Grid of wide streets with almost square houses with exactly the same size. The perfect place TO RENT an APARTMENT there FOR a FEW DAYS. Many of the buildings in Eixample are still preserved in the famous Catalan Art Nouveau style, making it the place with the highest concentration of Art Nouveau buildings in the world. In contrast to the narrow Barri Gòtic is the district of L’eixample (spoken: laschampla). About 1850, with the beginning of industrialization, Barcelona began to expand beyond the city walls to create a living and working space of the rapidly growing population. During this time, the striking chessboard pattern of the L’eixample (extension) was designed by the city planner Ildefons Cerdà. Cerdà had taken the floor plans of the American cities as a model here.
