In my opinion, Kentucky is a completely underestimated State for holidaymakers. Even active Southern lovers don’t often get lost in the Bluegrass State, but there is so much to experience here-be it nature, the Bourbon Trail or, as the Name suggests, the music history of the state.

On our vacation, we wanted to hike away from mass tourism and get to know the deep forests of Kentucky better and chose the Daniel Boone National Forest. No small forest, as you might think now – with about 2,800 km2 the Daniel Boone National Forest occupies even 5% of the total forest area of Kentucky.
The forest is divided into five districts: Morehead, Stanton, London, Somerset and Steams. With so much space, a part is of course well developed with roads and parking spaces, but a large proportion is still pure wilderness. We were there in June and met rather few fellow human beings, although the forest is apparently one of the most visited forests of the southern states with almost 5 million visitors per year. A dream for all nature lovers – be it for tourists who just want to hike or for mountaineers, anglers and hunters.
