The city on the Desna was for centuries acted as the center of the Orthodox Religion. After the establishment of Chernigov, it quickly became a competitor of Kiev in the battle for the role of capital of Rus.

The first archaeological finds from this Region indicate a first settlement around 6000 BC. Towards the middle of the 7th century n.
