Where is Cherkasy Located?

The Ukrainian port city of Cherkassy is located on the southern shore of Kremenchuk reservoir on the Dnieper River, about 160 km southeast of Kiev. Cherkassy is the administrative, economic and cultural centre of the Region.

Cherkasy has a rich history. First mentioned as a town in 1394, it belonged to Lithuanian, Polish, Russian; was a border area and had to fight against attacks of Mongols, Tatars and Turks. Was the center of the liberation wars under the Cossack Hetman Bogdan Khmelnitzki, suffered from Stalin’s repression, especially the Holodomor – and also the 2nd World War.
