Where is Carmel Village?

With its streets, which could be straight out of a storybook, this charming town draws sighs from guests at every turn. But it is not only visitors who fall in love with Carmel on the spot – it is also the case for artists, and their works fill the hundred or so galleries that are spread throughout the place. High-quality paintings of marine panoramas and other works of art can also be found at the Carmel Art Association, a non-profit Artists ‘ Collective. Much of the art – but also boutiques with fashion and gift items – is gathered on Ocean Avenue, which is particularly busy on weekends.

You can take a break when visiting the tranquil Tor House. The tour (only possible on Fridays and Saturdays) must be booked in advance, but the exquisite stone house of 1918, where poet Robinson Jeffers lived, and the surrounding gardens are well worth the effort. Another entertaining side trip is the afternoon “Yappy Hour” in the lobby of the Cypress Inn, owned by acting dog lover Doris Day: here all leashed dogs are welcome with good behavior – as well as their masters and mistresses.
