It is located on a gentle hill between the Rivers Irwell and Roach, on the banks of the Manchester-Bury-Bolton Canal, 14 km NE of Manchester. Well connected by road and canals with the surrounding towns, it also has a railway station on the Manchester-Accrington and Bolton-Rochdale lines.
