What County is Athens?

Athens is a university city, especially as the seat of the University of Georgia. The young big city, created by the incorporation of almost the entire Clarke district, has plenty of Flair and numerous historical buildings. In 1801, the university was founded (Athens consisted of about 8 houses at that time) and in 1806 Athens became the city. Athens developed rapidly as an industrial site. Founded in 1803, Elberton is the center of granite mining in the USA (“the capital of granite”). In the city there are numerous granite structures and monuments. Madison remained undisturbed in the Civil War and today has a remarkable historical structure. Washington, founded in 1780, has an unusually dense old structure. The city has a great interest in being the first in many things, such as being the first city named after George Washington or being the place where a woman was hanged for the first time in Georgia (1806). In addition to some plantations, there are traces of the Cherokee Indians in the vicinity of Athens. Greensboro is one of the poorest places in Georgia.
