Where is Anza-Borrego Desert State Park?

The name of this state park is composed of that of the famous Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza, who crossed this desert in 1774, and the Spanish word for “sheep goat” (borrego), a reference to the bighorn sheep native here.

This desert preserve – the largest state park in California – protects nearly 250,000 hectares of wasteland, palm oases, gorges and Cactus-riddled mountains. In this wild and remote place, visitors can witness the geological development, as Erosion and torrents are still permanently changing the landscape. Most of it is only accessible by simple roads or can be explored on foot. (You will find the best access if you rent a four-wheel drive vehicle with high ground clearance.) In return, you will experience amazing silence and unforgettable natural beauty.

Start your visit northwest of Borrego Springs at the park’s Visitor Center, which was built into the ground for more economical cooling. Learn more about this fascinating Park and how to explore it. Bighorn sheep are often seen on the nearby Trails to Palm Canyon.
