Basra, more correctly Basra, is the second largest city in Iraq, with a population of approximately 3,800,200 in 2009. It is the main port of the country, located near the Persian Gulf and 545 km south of the capital, Baghdad. It played an important role in the early Islamic history and was founded in 636.
