Bangkok. It is the capital and most populous city of Thailand and the third most populous city in Southeast Asia, preceded only by Jakarta and Manila.
It is also considered to be the political, social and economic center not only of Thailand but also of the Indochina Peninsula. The city is located at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River and has a population of 6,355,144 while the Greater Bangkok area has 11,971,000 inhabitants (according to the 2008 census).
In recent years the influence of the city in art, politics, fashion, education, sports and entertainment, as well as the strong foray into the world of business, it has given Bangkok the status of a global city. Bangkok really is not the name of the capital, although it is the one used universally since it was its ancient name and it was perpetuated to this day. This name means “village of the Wild Plum” which comes in turn from the name of a part of the west side of the Chao Phraya River called Thon Buri. In thai the city is known as Krung Thep Mahanakhon meaning “city of angels”. Bangkok is subdivided into 50 districts called khet or amphoe.
