Where is Yaroslavl Located?

The city of Yaroslavl (Russian: jar), more than 1,000 years old, is located at the mouth of the Volga and kotorosl Rivers, about 270 km northeast of Moscow. Among other ancient Russian cities Yaroslavl belongs to the so-called Golden Ring of Russia. The old town of Yaroslavl was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Prince Yaroslavl the wise is considered the founder of the city. According to legend, The Prince defeated a powerful bear in 1010 and founded a fortress on the site. A bear standing on two legs adorns the coat of arms of the city until today.

Yaroslavl was a hub of important trade routes between Russia, Western Europe and the East and quickly developed into one of Russia’s most important trading centers. The wealth also made Yaroslavl a desirable destination for numerous conquerors. Several times the city was burned down and rebuilt. But despite the destructive wars, many historical buildings have been preserved.
