The first school in the Macedonian language, the first high school, the first theatre, the first library, the first Museum and the first music school was opened in Veles.

Veles is located in the central part of the country in the middle course of the Vardar River. It is located on the main artery of the Balkan Peninsula along the valley of the rivers Morava and Vardar, and the main railway line in the Republic of Macedonia runs through this city. The railway is divided into two railway lines: one of them leads to the eastern part of Macedonia (Shtip and Kochani), and the other leads to the southwestern part (Prilep and Veles). Therefore, Veles is the second important railway junction in the Republic of Macedonia, after Skopje.
