The city has about 100,000 inhabitants and with the wider area is approximately 170,000. Tuzla is the economic, University, Cultural, health and tourism centre of northeastern Bosnia. The settlement of Tuzla has always been closely related to the salt deposits and camps. The oldest document, which comes from the ancient Greeks, testifies to the fact that the Greeks were still known with the rich salt deposits in this area. Tuzla got the name much later. The current town name comes from the Turkish word tuz, meaning salt. The first document from the Ottoman period, in which the use of the Salt pits of Tuzla is mentioned, dates from 1548.
