The Centre Pompidou is Paris. – Centre National d’art et de la Culure Georges Pompidou – was built between 1972 and 1977 on an undeveloped site that served as a parking lot for the market halls of Paris – Les Halles. Until the beginning of the 20th century, many writers and poets lived in the Paris district – Beaubourg. The district also served Victor Hugo as the setting for the novels” Notre Dame de Paris “and”Les Miserables”.

The Centre Pompidou was initiated by former president Georges Pompidou as a cultural centre. In its place were previously only a fallow and a parking lot, which should now be better used. It was designed by the architects Renzo Piano (Nemo in Amsterdam, The Shard in London), Richard Rogers (O2 Arena London, Madrid Barajas airport) and Gianfranco Franchini. In January 1977 it was opened by Pompidou’s successor President Giscard d’estaing.
