Targu Jiu is the district capital of the Gorj district in the historical region of small Walachei and has about 82 000 inhabitants. The city is located in the foothills of the southern Carpathians, and extends over a length of 13 km from North to South and 10 km from East to West on both sides of the river Jiu, in which the city is named.
