According to current findings it is known that the area of today’s Szombathely was already inhabited in the Stone Age. At the time of Roman supremacy in Europe, the city was first mentioned as Colonia Claudia Sabariensum in the year 43 after Christ.
The small settlement experienced an enormous economic upswing after the foundation of the Amber Road, which passed directly to the village, and turned from a transit place for travelers to a flourishing city. Szombathely received a great fame because Saint Martin of Tours was born in this city around 317 and later became one of the most important European Saints.
