Sumy is located about 350 km east of Kiev in Ukraine and about 700 km from Moscow and has about 320,000 inhabitants. The partnership with Sumy is based on long-term economic relations, especially in the field of the oil supply industry.

The partnership was officially founded in Celle on 17.01.1990. In the agreement concluded at the time, both cities seek to exchange ideas and experiences, in particular in the fields of culture, education, sport, tourism, health care, environmental protection and, more generally, between people, especially young people and pupils.
