Where is St. Patrick’s Cathedral?

Saint Patrick’s Cathedral is considered one of the landmarks of New York. Due to its central location on Fifth Avenue and across the street from Rockefeller Center, you can’t miss this great cathedral. St. Patrick’s dates back to the 19th century and is the largest neo-Gothic cathedral in North America.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral was originally located on Mulberry Street, but when the cathedral proved too small for all devotees in 1853, it was time to move. The new cathedral was to be much larger and the client Archbishop Hughes decided that moving Uptown would be the best option. His idea was initially not very popular, as at that time this area was still very far from the city centre. Hughes predicted that this district would very soon form the heart of New York – and he was right! According to tradition, the foundation stone of the cathedral was laid in 1858. Today, Saint Patrick’s Cathedral is located in the heart of Midtown, a stone’s throw from other New York landmarks such as Central Park and Grand Central Terminal.
