Where is Sittwe Located?
The city of Mrauk-U (literally ‘ monkey-Egg to be translated; means “potato”) in the Rakhine state is located in the West of the Republic, East of the Kaladan river and is not far from the border with Bangladesh. It is pronounced “Mraw-oo”. It was one of the wealthiest trading towns in Myanmar and is therefore definitely worth a visit with its archaeological temple towns, ruins and pagodas. Because today Mrauk U counts as the second Bagan for many travelers and thus the second-most important attraction of the country.

The state ferry does not operate today. That’s why the German couple from the Chin Tour and I charter a boat for the way back from Mrauk U. On plastic chairs we take a seat on board the “Winner” and travel by water through the Rakhine state in northwestern Myanmar. Our destination: the port city of Sittwe on the Gulf of Bengal, which was called Akyab by the British colonial rulers. From there, the flights to Yangon start.
