Seney NWR is a large refuge, almost 150 km2, in the middle of the. It is criss-crossed with hiking trails and two cogs Scenic Drives, and dozens of lakes and ponds.

For the average visitor, like me someone in transit, there are some interesting activities. For starters, there is a beautiful visitor Centre at M 77 . There is a short presentation about the refuge and and a small Museum with information about life that makes the refuge lives.

There are also modern toilets, a welcome stop along an otherwise desolate section m 77 .

The VC features many of the hands on exhibitions and children of all ages will enjoy touching and handling furs, bones and other items.

There are also two round Wildlife drives that both start at the end of the parking lot (how to get there when you’re out) . on the ride is a use of at least an hour or even more than the rides are 1 – way roads. The Wildlife Drive is about 7 km, and the fishing Loop carries about 3 more in total. The speed limit on the drives is at 15, but if you really want to see Wildlife, you’ll also have to slow down and keep your eyes open.

We took the wildlife Drive and the fishing Loop and it took about 2 . 5 hours. We saw geese, Loons, a black Snake, cormorants, Ducks, Ospreys, otters, swans, kingfishers and many common birds. When I return, I’m not sure if I count it the fishing Loop in my trip as it was about the same Terrain/Habitat.

The roads are gravel to pull and there are places to drive away from time to time or through traffic. There are also several places where you are invited to get out of your vehicle and watch from a well placed patio or on a side Trail.

But be warned, the insects are more greedy in mid – summer! They seem to be of the opinion that our 50% DEET insect spray was a kind of catnip, not mosquito spray and the deer fly, mosquitoes marched and fly quickly drove us back in the car. Then the insects sat at the window the Rest of the trip, I would perhaps unintentionally hoped to click the “window”. They were so persistent and numerous that it was somewhat creepy.

I believe that for younger children (pre-Teen), the wildlife ride won’t be particularly interesting if you have to actuate a substitute until mom or dad say, ” Hey look, there’s im . . . “Binoculars are a very good idea to take on the ride. The visitor center has binoculars and fishing Kits for hire.

The animal and plant life ride ends at M 77, and not in the visitor centre. To get back to the VC, you have to turn left (northbound) and walk about 1/4 mile to the entrance.

This is a great, easy going place to visit and see some of the natural wonders of the Upper Peninsula. If you want to spend a few hours, the wildlife ride is worth the detour as long as you are patient.
