The sea of Marmara is connected to the Black Sea in the northeast via the Bosphorus and to the Adriatic Sea in the West via the Dardanelles – and thus to the Mediterranean Sea.

The sea of Marmara is an inland sea and is located in the northwest of Turkey, by which it is completely surrounded. Together with the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles, it forms the boundary between the European part of Turkey and the Asian. It connects the Dardanelles and Bosperus with the Black Sea
The sea covers an area of 11,655 km2 – of which about 180 km2 are islands, with a water volume of 3,380 km3. The sea has a length between Izmit and Gallipoli of 260 km as the crow flies, with a maximum width of about 70 km. The distance from Gallipoli to Istanbul is about 205 km. Its deepest point is about 1,355 m below the sea surface.
