Where is Sea of Japan? What Sea is Japan in?

Where is Sea of Japan?

It is bounded South and East by the Japanese islands, north by the island of Sakhalin and West by the mainland of North Korea, Russia and South Korea. The sea of Japan is connected to the Pacific Ocean by the Korea Strait in the south, the Tsugaru Strait between the Japanese islands of Honshū and Hokkaidō, and the La Pérouse Strait between the islands of Hokkaidō and Sakhalin, as well as the sea of Okhotsk through the Tatar mountains in the North.

The sea of Japan has an area of approximately 978,000 km2 with an average depth of 1,752 meters and a maximum depth of 4,049 meters. It can be divided into three basins: The Northern Japan basin is the deepest area of the Yamato basin lies in the Southeast, and the Tsushima basin in the southwest. The water is shallow in the Yamato Basin. There, the ground is only about 285 meters below sea level. The coasts of the Eastern Islands are wide and relatively flat, in contrast to the mainland shores, especially in the West, along the coast of Korea, steep, rough and stony.

    To Whomever It May Concern

Recently I visited your website below: https://whereismap.net/where-is-sea-of-japan-what-sea-is-japan-in/

And I was quite surprised to find your websites still label Korea’s ‘East Sea’ as ‘Sea of Japan,’ which is incorrect. Such an error on such a well-known website such as yours comes as a surprise since we regard you as one of the world’s best.

Using a proper name for the body of water between the Korean peninsula and the Japanese archipelago is not simply a question of changing the name of a geographical feature. It is part of the national effort by the Korean people to erase the legacy of Japanese Imperialism and to redress the unfairness that has resulted from it.

It is an absolute mistake to hear just one side of the story and to blindly follow. If we leave these kinds of things alone, it causes serious problems that disturb the order of international society.

For your reference, Dorling & Kindersley, one of biggest textbook publishers, worldatlas.com, one of prominent online map provider, and one of the biggest mapmakers, National Geographic promised us that they would now use the name ‘East Sea.’ In addition, these websites are already using the name, ‘East Sea’ on their website after we pointed out the error.

As a member of the Voluntary Agency Network of Korea (VANK), I urge you to use ‘East Sea’ to describe the body of water in question or to use both Korean and Japanese designation simultaneously (e.g. ‘East Sea/Sea of Japan’) in all of your contents and maps.

According to IHO and UNCSGN, in case of topographical feature shared with two or more countries, yet naming differently in their own languages, all of the names in each language should be marked.

Once Korea and Japan agree on a common designation, that is in accord with the general rule of international cartography, we will then follow the agreed-on designation.

Thank you for reading and we would appreciate your favorable consideration.
We would be grateful for your explanation as to why you chose to use ‘Sea of Japan’.
Please email us at or my e-mail adress.

    Yours very truly,
VANK, Cyber Diplomatic Organization in Korea

    To whomever it may concern

Hello. I’m Chaeeun Ahn from south Korea.
    Recently I visited your website below ;
    https://whereismap.net/where-is-sea-of-japan-what-sea-is-japan-in/

And I found out that your website is still using the name Sea of Japan which is wrong.
Sea of Japan is not a correct word. It is “East sea”. East sea is Korean territory and you whould call it “Sea of Japan”.
I was quite surprised that your website as I know it is famous for helping people to find the location which is on Earth are posting such an incorrect information.
I know a lot of people are visiting your website and I’m worried if people all around the world will think East sea is Sea of Japan.
As a Korean, and as a person who live in the country, I want to make sure it is called in a correct word and want to let people know about Korea and the East sea.
So I want you to change the name of the sea from ‘Sea of Japan’ to ‘East sea’ and correct the name of your post, “Where is East Sea?”.

Using proper name of a sea which is located between Korean Peninsula and Japan is not only for the correct information
but also a process that corrects Japan’s misunderstanding of wrongful claims.
Thank you for reading my letter and I look forward to your consideration and reply accordingly.
    Have a nice day 🙂

Hello, I am contacting you to request the correction of your website, as a member of Dokdo Cyber Press, Korea.
The thing is, ‘Sea of Japan’ has to be written as ‘East Sea’, since the area is Korean territory.
‘East Sea’ first appeared in the historical document of Korea in B.C. 59, which was 70 years earlier than the year when the name of ‘Japan’ was officially first used.
Also, it is not appropriate to call the sea using one certain country’s name since it meets four countries(South Korea, North Korea, Russia and Japan) on its border. It is reasonable enough to change ‘Sea of Japan’ to ‘East Sea’.
I hope those problems to be resolved as soon as possible, since it is an open-media accessible to anyone.
Please reply to lahyun0619@gmail.com after the correction.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

    Dear website creator,

I have come across your website,https://whereismap.net/where-is-sea-of-japan-what-sea-is-japan-in/, after seeing your ‘Where is Sea of Japan? What Sea is Japan in?’ image on Google as I was searching for a certain image that was for an assignment/project I was assigned to at my Korean school I attend. I hope this letter finds you well, and I hope by the end of this, you will at least consider my ideas and opinions on the image you have posted. I am not trying to form a dispute here with you on whether the map should have it labeled as ‘Sea of Japan’ or ‘East Sea’, but I do have a strong belief that all maps, including the one on your website, should have it labeled as ‘East Sea’. There is even historical evidence to support why and prove that Japan did not have the right to just claim it as their sea. The objective lead by the crooked and twisted mind of Japan has, unfortunately, led to many confusions and people being misled and being blinded from the real truth. So people aren’t sure what really is the appropriate name to address the sea that is between Korea and Japan, but it did belong to Korea since the beginning.
For over 2,000 years, the name ‘East Sea’ has been used. To be more specific, it has been used as early as 59 BC as written in ‘The Chronicles of the Three Kingdoms.” It was also found on the maps of Korea and other maps such as the one Marco Polo had in the year 1744.
However, it was when the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) published its first map that had all the names of the oceans and seas. They ended up publishing their first edition map with the name Sea of Japan since Korea was suppressed under Japan’s rule at that time and was not allowed to tell the world that it was originally called East Sea. And so it was not printed on the map IHO presented and other countries saw this and thought that it was really called the Sea of Japan which was not the right.
Japan also claims that they have used the name Sea of Japan since the 19th century. However, the maps that were used at that time by Japan had the name, Sea of Joseon (Korea), ironically. This is another evidence that the sea originally belonged to Korea because clearly, Japan has also used the name Sea of Joseon before as well, admitting it belonged to Korea before they took it away from them.
To conclude, it is NOT the Sea of Japan but rather the East Sea as proven by historical facts. We will not stop fighting for what truly belongs to us until it is done, and we will always make sure we have what is rightfully ours from the very beginning.

Dokdo is Korean territory, not Japanese territory.
Japan continues to distort history, Dokdo is Japanese territory, and claims false information throughout the world.
A lot of people about Korean people who know the Sea of Japan, the donghae was silver coins. East Sea, Dokdo is Korean knows a lot of foreigners all know that Korean soil.
In the picture sea of japan want you to see handwriting and South Korean territory.

Since the East Sea area is adjacent to South Korea, North Korea, Japan, and Russia, it is not correct to name the East Sea area after one of the countries involved. The ‘United Nations Conference on the Standardization of Geographical Names’, which dealt with the standardization of geographical names, also recommends that if there is a dispute over a geographical name, it should be added temporarily until an agreement is reached between the countries concerned.
East Sea is a name that has legitimacy in terms of international norms.
A common method for determining marine names is mostly by following the continent names to the left of the marine area. In the case of the East Sea, it is argued that the East Sea should be used to mean the sea located to the east of the Eurasian continent as well as the Korean Peninsula.
Please change the Sea of Japan to the Sea of Japan or indicate the Sea of Japan together.
