Where is Saratov Located?

Saratov is one of the oldest cities of the lower Volga (Russia), is surrounded by four sand. The largest is 278 m high and is called Falkenberg. From this mountain comes the name of the city of Saratov. “Sary tau” means from Tatar Yellow Mountain.

Saratov was founded in 1590, as the Czar’s fortress under the Moscow Prince Sassekin. During the reign of Tsar Ivan IV (called Ivan the Terrible) expanded the Russian state by the conquest of the Tatar States of Kazan and Astrakhan. The territory between these two States was occupied by the Tatars. In order to strengthen the Russian influence in this area, three large cities were built on the Volga, one of them was Saratov.

Where is Saratov Located?

The city of Saratov is located in Saratov region in the Southeast of the Eastern European part of the RF in the lower Volga region. The distance from Saratov to Moscow is 858 km. It borders Samara, Penza and Ulyanovsk in the North, Voronezh and Tambov in the West, Volgograd in the south and the Republic of Kazakhstan and Orenburg in the East. Saratov is located on the Right Bank of the Volga, in a large picturesque bend of the river. Nature is characterized by the Volga, the steppes and the oak forests. Many islands of the Volga make the Saratov Region a true bird paradise.

Below and above the town, the river is 3-10 km wide and 10-15 m deep. In summer you can swim here. In this part of Russia has a continental climate. Summer temperatures often reach 30-40 degrees Celsius, in Winter it can be below-20-30 °C. The administrative center is the city of Saratov. Saratov covers an area of almost 400 square kilometers, with a population of about 1 000 000 people.
