San Juan is the capital of the homonymous province and is located in an oasis, surrounded by dry steppe-like landscape. The oldest city of Argentina (founded in 1561 or 1562) was destroyed in 1944 by an earthquake. The complete reconstruction gives San Juan today a modern feel with many new buildings.
